Spiderman 3 Too Much Or Too Little?

First Paragraph Original

For any Superhero/comic book fanatic the opening to the movie is both exciting and suspenseful. Starting with the Marvel comic book strips flickering across the screen to the opening credits along with a recap of images from the previous two movies. As the movie begins it seems as if Peter Parker (Toby Maguire) has finally been able to find a nice balance between his personal life as Peter and his secret identity as Spiderman. He seems to be pretty confident which is a huge improvement from the nerdy, insecure boy from the first movie. Now, if you are familiar with Toby Maguire’s role as Peter Parker in the previous movies you know that he played the nerdy, insecure boy to the “T”, so you can imagine how uncomfortable it is to watch him still play the nerdy boy acting cool and confident throughout this movie.

As Peter still demonstrates his nerdy personality, he seems to evoke some confidence throughout the movie that can be awkward to watch.
Second Paragraph Original
The movie had the potential to be one of the greatest superhero movies to date, but somehow whether it be that the script lacked focus and direction or just simply the fact that they tried to cram too much into the short 139 minutes that the movie turned out to be, which as you may know isn’t very long for movies now a days where the norm seems to be stretching to over 2 hours. Even though the movie in length wasn’t long, while viewing it seemed to drag at some parts whereas in others it felt like they were jumping all over the place. From the very beginning you are able to see this. They have the scene of MJ (Kirsten Dunst) on stage singing which is a slow and awkward scene to watch to a scene where Peter and MJ are lying on a web having a conversation that seems long and almost pointless to the movie. They then seem to jump pretty abruptly to the introduction of the man who later will become the Sandman. This scene is pretty fast paced and by the time it ends you are left wondering what happened as it jumps to the next scene. It continues to do this throughout the rest of the movie and really just lacks that nice transition from scene to scene.

Second Paragraph Revised
The movie had the potential to be one of the greatest superhero movies to date, but somehow fell short. Whether it be that the script lacked focus or simply the fact that they tried to cram too much into the short 139 minutes of the Final Cut. Even though the movie in length wasn’t long, while viewing it seemed to drag at some parts whereas in others it felt like they were jumping all over the place. In the begining MJ (Kirsten Dunst) is on stage singing which is a slow and awkward scene due to her not being "Broadway Material", which is followed by a scene where Peter and MJ are having a conversation while lying on a web.
I believe these scenes to be awkward because Kirsten Dunst's acting skills are awkward in themselves. From there they abruptly jump to the introduction of the man who later will become the Sandman. This scene is fast paced and by the time it ends you are left wondering what happened as it keeps jumping from scene to scene.

Forth Paragraph Original
In this movie they tried to incorporate 3 villains which is why I felt it had the potential to be great. But it fell short from those expectations partly because I felt their presence in the movie was under developed. Towards the beginning of the movie they introduce the Sandman (Thomas Haden Church) and he seems pretty random as to why he is a part of the movie until they finally tie him in with being someone who was involved in something that occurred in the first movie.  Then there is Peter’s best friend Harry (James Franco) who is carrying around a lot of turmoil over learning in the previous movie that Spiderman is really Peter Parker and the fact that Harry believed that Spiderman is who had killed his father. Harry decides to follow in his father’s footsteps, to become the new Green Goblin and avenge his father’s death. As if these two villains aren’t enough to develop a good story line for a movie they decide as the movie has maybe a quarter of it’s length to go to throw in the villain Venom.

Fifth Paragraph Original
They are able to make everything connect throughout the movie and in the end it does make a good movie. The problem is that for superhero/comic book fans it’s just not enough. It doesn’t hold up to a superhero or action movie standard by any stretch on the other hand even though there may be few, the special effects used in the movie are pretty cool. Take how they are able to make the Sandman appear out of a huge truck of sand still resembling his human facial features just made out of sand or how the character Venom at first doesn’t represent his comic book self but in the last few scenes with him they really are able to make him look realistic and lifelike. The way his mouth opens from ear to ear with the super sharp, pointy white teeth, really does make for a good villain.

Director Sam Raimi who has been invested in the Spiderman movies from the begining manages to tie up the triology quite well. The problem is that for superhero/comic book fans it’s just not enough. It doesn’t hold up to a superhero or action movie standard. On the other hand, even though there may be few, the special effects used in the movie are pretty cool. Sixth Paragraph Original
The movie has a really great cast and they really seem to work and interact well together. As I mentioned in the beginning Toby Maguire does a good job with his part and really does bring Peter Parker to life. James Franco is able to embrace his new role in this movie as a villain and even surprises on how well he can play this part by being sneaky and manipulative. The new character who adds a lot of excitement to the movie is Topher Grace who plays Eddie Brock, the new freelancer who is out to take Peter’s job at the Daily Bugle. His character throughout the movie is witty but at the same time a bit obnoxious and just seems to rub Peter the wrong way. All in all the acting may be the only area that didn’t need improvement. If you go into this movie with the expectation of being blown away by nonstop action because you think “3 villains = lots of fight scenes” you will be sadly disappointed, however if you are just wanting to tie up the loose ends that you may have felt were left from the previous two movies your needs will most definitely be met.
